Mark Mallman – “Seen My Own Ghost”

Amongst Minneapolis’ most well-regarded acts, Mark Mallman has impressed with nine albums since debuting in 1998 with The Tourist. His latest track, “Seen My Own Ghost” is a compelling, melodic success that also represents his first release for new label Hygh Tension Records, which is run by Ryan Smith (Soul Asylum). It marks a continued ascent for Mallman, who is also finding success on TikTok with his fun doses of music and pop culture history.

Taking aesthetical inspiration from Michael Jackson’s “Billie Jean,” “Seen My Own Ghost” enamors with its confident vocal drive amidst clanging piano tones and touches of synths. “It chilled me to the bone,” vocal layers complement infectiously, traversing seamlessly into the “I’ve been lied to, by the best,” hook. “Seen My Own Ghost” is a catchy, stylish showcase from Mark Mallman.

“You see your past self in the present when you remember a difficult relationship,” Mallman says. “It’s like looking at a ghost of yourself. The ghosts of our past serve to remind us of how we’ve grown.”

This and other tracks featured this month can be streamed on the updating Obscure Sound’s ‘Emerging Singles’ Spotify playlist.
