“Waiting Tables” is a personal, affecting success from Queen Bonobo, who describes the release as “about getting clear in the vision of how I want my life to be and letting all that’s not serving me go.” She continues: “I’ve been in the service industry since I was 14 and this song is my slightly sassy and soothing way of manifesting success in my music career.” The project comes via Maya Goldblum, a queer and androgynous artist originally from Idaho. Goldblum describes the project as emphasizing “healing and liberation,” and that latter sense is certainly emphasized on this standout track, which embraces one’s own personal journey and the valuing of doing something you truly love in life.
“All I want is safety, all I want is peace,” Goldblum’s melodic vocals begin amidst understated acoustic strums. The search for a personal solace, where one can simply listen to the rain, ventures into more personal introspections. Glistening keys and twangy guitar adornments are then incorporated with seamless entrancement, reminding fondly of Mitski in the layered vocals and country-touched pop/rock charm. It culminates in a wonderful appreciation for art and ambition, and what makes one truly happy, instead of simply “waiting tables”: “All I want is to be cherished by those I love / All I want is a band that wants to go with me on the road.”
