Martin Kuiper – “Low On Love”

Harnessing personal reflections on youth and mental resilience, “Low On Love” is a potent focal point on Martin Kuiper’s upcoming record, Prison Of Modesty. Written decades ago in Groningen, the track explores the initial shock of depression through soaring anthemic arrangements. This dual-release project includes a 1998 time capsule version, bridging the Dutch artist’s past with his modern rock evolution. The track also marks continued success for Kuiper, who enamored us the past year with the Dreaming of a Sea of Time EP and track “Time.”

Fuzzy rhythm guitars excel quickly into a heartfelt twanging, setting the track into motion with dynamic appeal. Bass-heavy intrigue and lonesome whistling follow, as does Kuiper’s solemn vocal tone: “I never wanted me to stay / In this state where love’s erased.” These laments are backed by an introspective array of instrumentation, ascending with seamless ardor as bursts of impassioned guitars meld with Kuiper’s soaring “and I never felt this way, so take me down and free my brain,” plea.

The production absolutely excels in its palpable momentum, arising into a blistering rock emotion. Multi-layered vocal passion drives into an especially memorable moment a bit after the two-minute turn, where a scorching-hot guitar solo flows gorgeously alongside bustling bass and vibrant rhythms. A final “never felt this way” refrain emerges thereafter, driving into a final minute that embraces a lusher, whistling-laden calmness. “Low On Love” is another piece of stirring songwriting from Martin Kuiper.
