Danish composer Nils Lassen channels the warm stillness of midday summer on “Somersault,” the dream-pop second single from his upcoming album Rain Steam Speed. Evoking the understated, spacious textures of Slowdive and Talk Talk, the track layers spacey synths, gentle guitar jangles, and memorable vocal harmonies into an immersive outdoor ambiance.
“Right here, right now, I’m hanging upside down,” Lassen’s melodic vocal layers emit amidst spacey synth ruminations, quickly accompanied by steady rhythms and dreamy, wordless vocal harmonies. Twinkling keys and balmy guitar jangling bolster the carpe-diem thematic hold, capturing the “glory of the midday summer” as the lead vocals mingle with vibrant backing complements. Those soaring vocal harmonies and gliding keys continue to enamor into the second minute, frolicking with effervescent introspection in the movements between the elegantly lush instrumentation and caressing vocal blissfulness.
The track’s final minute is especially absorbing, atmospherically, as descriptions of blue summer skies meld with elongated vocal tones — aptly arriving into samples of bird-chirping and overall warming outdoor ambience, where one can practically feel the sun kissing their skin. Coming from the upcoming album Rain Steam Speed, out in September, “Somersault” is a lovely, melodic standout from Nils Lassen, who previously caught our ears with the track “Under Your Spell.”
