Toll – “Sears Tower”

St. Petersburg, FL-based artist Toll blends folk and alt-pop on “Sears Tower,” pairing understated guitar arrangements with introspective vocals and reflections on finding perspective amid the distractions of everyday life. The track is part of an ambitious project to release one new song every Friday for 52 consecutive weeks. The artist describes this track as using “Chicago’s iconic skyscraper as the backdrop for a song about overthinking, feeling disconnected, and trying to find peace in the present moment.”

Scenic lyricism, depicting one marveling at Chicago from the Sears Tower, combines with an enjoyable alt-folk presence and drive “to be present.” “City looks so pretty from up here, at least that’s what they’re saying in my ear,” the artist’s mellow vocals resonate amidst steady acoustic strums, hypnotizing in its consistent tonal demeanor and melodic vocal delivery, at times sounding fondly reminiscent of Frank Ocean. “Sears Tower” is a vibe-y, atmospheric success from Toll.
