Eternal Mourning explores insomnia through a dreamy folk sound on the track “Drums Are Beating My Steps,” capturing the restless thoughts and uneasy disorientation of another sleepless night amidst layered acoustics, haunting vocal backings, and a persistent sense of late-night tension. Eternal Mourning, which is the solo project of Montreal-based singer-songwriter Philippe Mouran, previously caught our ears with excellent 2024 album A Draft.
Trickling guitars open the track with atmospheric appeal, traversing into gentle bass ruminations and ghostly, wordless vocals. A nocturnal chilliness emanates in the introduction’s soundscape, with the haunting qualities maintaining as Mouran’s vocals emerge. The vivid depictions of stress-induced insomnia follow: “Sweat keeping me from rest, I’m truly under stress.” The laments of “another sleepless night” combine with the addition of slight percussion, as the lead vocals meld with glimpses of haunting backing vocal layers.
A striking title-touting sequence emerges around midpoint, delectably woozy and reflective of late-night spirals in its mmm-ing vocal backings and ongoing acoustic trickling, playing like a restless force. Pit-pattering rhythms and twangier guitar adornments compel into the track’s finale, following powerful vocal refrains with further enthralling atmospheric vision. A final vocal repetition — “drums are beating my steps” — then lingers gorgeously into the conclusion, fading like a specter in the night. “Drums Are Beating My Steps” is a riveting output from Eternal Mourning, affecting in its dreamy folk aesthetic and lyrical ruminations on sleepless nights.
