Los Angeles-based indie-pop duo Queen Anne, consisting of singer-songwriter Katie Silverman and producer Sandy Chila, pair brisk acoustic guitar work and infectious melodic hooks with sharp, emotionally candid songwriting on “Greyhound.” Their fifth release, the October 16 single explores the complicated pull of affection toward someone who may not deserve it, balancing Silverman’s vulnerable lyricism with the duo’s knack for catchy, finely layered pop arrangements.
Brisk acoustic work and equally rapid vocal allure open the track, alternating between the “run far from the fears that you couldn’t face” punchy pace to the soaring, hooky vocal segments. The “when I wake up in the middle of the night” bridge excels into a heartfelt chorus, where Queen Anne admits to “thinking about you” and still being smitten. The verses’ shifts between relationship descriptors and “I’ll be thinking of you” admissions compel throughout, with added guitar jangling at midpoint fully captivating, as well.
“There’s no reason I should love you like I do,” her vocals shine during an enthralling bridge, propelled by melancholic piano. Guitar-forward momentum builds enjoyably thereafter, as does the vocals’ re-emergence, which is “waiting all night just to say it back.” “Greyhound” is a thorough success from Queen Anne, excelling across both stream-of-conscious feeling in the verses and head-over-heels jangle-pop vigor in the series of hooks. It’s another success for Queen Anne, who also caught our ears earlier this year with the track “Watch Me Win It.”
