Tugboat Captain – “No Plans (For This Year)”

/

“No Plans (For This Year)” is a new single from London-based quartet Tugboat Captain, off their debut album Rut, out in October. The track marks an expansion for the band from “lo-fi roots” into a “more symphonic, baroque-pop” sound. A bouncy piano-laden charm builds nicely to “no plans for this year,” chorus, a timely and poignant lyric. Melodic interplay between guitar and brass consumes thereafter. An interesting melodic twist takes place around 02:25, reminding me fondly of BC Camplight’s meshing between rock distortion and chamber-pop whimsy. “No Plans (For This Year)” certainly has me excited for Rut in October.

“No Plans (For This Year)” and other memorable tracks from this month can also be streamed on the updating Obscure Sound’s ‘Best of July 2020’ Spotify playlist.
