Maybird – “The Story”

/

“The Story” is a rousing rocker from Maybird, whose sound fondly reminds me of early Supergrass. Off the Rochester-based band’s new EP Bird Sides, “The Story” wastes no time, launching into a flurry of melodic guitars and anthemic vocals after a quick intro. “When you love someone, you gotta set them free,” the vocals soar, the final word lengthened alongside lingering guitar tones, reminiscent of Smith Westerns in that sense. Added guitar distortion in the second half continues a fervent, climactic feel, amidst an enjoyably familiar structure and feel. The rest of the EP is recommended as well, with highlights including the emotively anthemic “If Then” and dazed, jangly “Dreamcatcher.”
