En-Kay – “Changing Tides”

/

Showing a lovely sophisti-pop vein reminiscent of Prefab Sprout, “Changing Tides” is a recent track from En-Kay, the project of New York-based Nathanael Koenig. Bird-chirping and jazzy acoustics consume initially, as Koenig’s vocals successfully balance suaveness and emotion. “It’s easier to go with the flow,” Koenig sings amidst flourishing, rising guitars and fleeting dashes of keys. The expressive vocal layers, especially upon the “with you,” refrain, plays hypnotically throughout. “Changing Tides” shows a melodic vein of sophisti-pop, fondly reminding me of early Prefab Sprout cuts like “Cruel.” I’m certainly anticipating what’s next from En-Kay.

“Changing Tides” and other memorable tracks from this month can also be streamed on the updating Obscure Sound’s ‘Best of December 2021’ Spotify playlist.

The track is also featured in the genre-based, best-of Spotify compilation Sophisti-Pop Playlist.
