Tom Tikka & The Missing Hubcaps – “Something New”

/

“Something New” is a moving ballad with ’80s flair from Tom Tikka & The Missing Hubcaps. Formerly a member of the bands Carmen Gray and The Impersonators, the Helsinki-based artist explains that the new single is “about that utterly sad moment when you realize it’s time to leave the person you love behind. The song is a testament to the fact that love in itself is not enough. You also need compatibility.”

“Yet between the two of us, it’s hard to find something new,” the vocals lament amidst a ballad-ready piano lead. The string-laden backing arises as the vocals play ardently, with “sunshine becomes rain,” imagery adding to the sense of despair — and hope for a break in the storm. “We both need something new,” the vocals affirm, as backing vocal theatrics and swift strings immerse further. “Something New” eloquently captures the feeling of when moving on is best for both parties, stirring in its range from piano-fronted balladry to expressive vocal passion.

This and other tracks featured this month can be streamed on the updating Obscure Sound’s ‘Best of July 2023’ Spotify playlist.
