Recorded at Elliott Smith’s former New Monkey Studio, the track explores self-acceptance amid personal transformation.
“Change” opens with a rhythm-driven allure, weaving a hypnotic bass spaciousness and steady percussive pitter-patter. “I’m in denial, I know I just keep doing things the same old way,” Matsos’ lead delivery intones with calming introspection. The stream-of-consciousness, contemplative narrations are enjoyably relatable, particularly in instances like “why’d I just smile at that person I don’t even know?”; it captures the internal, anxious thoughts that can be prompted by everyday interactions. The ensuing “why do I see things clearer the further I go?” questioning continues a theme of personal evolution, increasing clarity, and acceptance.
The shift to a more rollicking rock energy, just past the one-minute turn, pairs artfully in theme as Matsos proclaims “now I’ve got a reason to be reborn.” The lyricism here admits to not being in control while embracing a new sense of purpose. Another striking tonal turn delights thereafter, where his singing strives not to “force this feeling” amidst a mellower, soulful tone, reminding fondly of Cass McCombs in its moody demeanor and “who is this imposter, that casts no doubt?” poetic allure. Stirring across moments of gripping introspection and fervent rock catharsis, “Change” is a stellar track from Lee Miller Matsos.
