tuftyhead – “Looking Forward” + “Why Are They Calling You?”

Berlin-based producer and multi-instrumentalist Max Hirtz-Wolf, recording as tuftyhead, pairs groove-focused funk, disco, and neo-soul influences across “Looking Forward” and “Why Are They Calling You?”, blending danceable rhythms and colorful synth arrangements with vulnerable songwriting. The two singles preview his upcoming debut album, balancing melodic accessibility with richly textured psychedelic production.

Soft synths and lush vocals open “Looking Forward,” exuding a sense of anticipation in its title-bearing drive “to the day, when I can take your word, and I won’t ignore it.” A funky, grooving bass line complements these woozy synths and serene vocals, pairing vulnerability and infectiousness throughout. A vibrant synth injection and “standing in my lover’s arms” vocal embrace furthers the infectious prowess, seamlessly shifting throughout from the rhythm-laden verses and more synth-y flourishes. The masterful production puts on a clinic in both melodic contagiousness and stylish atmospherics.

The more recent of the two tracks, “Why Are They Calling You?” embraces a more classic songwriting vibe with psychedelic dream-pop allure. The responsive backing vocals, mellow keys, and pit-pattering rhythms enamor throughout, with the “all I can give to you” emotive bridge dazzling amidst fluttering guitars and ascending vocals. Funky synth strides and a captivating croon ensue in the central hook, inducing replays in its catchy bass walk and memorable synth tones, all while thematically describing “the toils of someone putting in intense emotional labor without getting it back.” A standout pair of tracks, both singles shine as stellar previews of what is to come from tuftyhead.
