Orikami – “Dead in the Water”

Orikami - Dead In The Water

Based out of Kennesaw, Georgia, the electronic duo of 19-year-old Drew Domalik and 20-year-old Steven Skunberg craft an entrancing audible world with their project Orikami. Brand new track “Dead in the Water” begins with the slight trickle of a stream, as a gentle piano soon caresses the entry of angelic high-pitched vocal samples — lyrically inaudible but heavenly and hypnotic in their delivery and execution alone. The eventual accompaniment of lower-pitched, more R&B-inclined vocals is a stellar tactical choice, reminding of artists like Burial, How to Dress Well, and others that infuse an intoxicating blend of vocal pitches to create an otherworldly sound, one marked by trickling electronic samples and pleasant key-based minimalism. The hand-clap percussion adds to the naturalistic feel, one that isn’t easy to come by with recent electronica acts. In that sense, Orikami have the potential to be something special. “A Cosmic Dance”, their collaboration with Hai5Gohst, reinforces that sentiment:
