si,irene – “Awful Pop Song”

Tokyo post-punk rockers si,irene impress on the tongue-in-cheek “Awful Pop Song”, which from relatively clanky beginnings to a more expanded vein of alt-rock at the 46-second mark, reminding fondly of The Go-Betweens in the vocal delivery and track’s hook-y turn. Ironically, as the chorus goes on about its status as an awful pop song, it shows a very strong hook that begs for repeated listens: precisely what quality pop should do. “Does this song even reach you? I wrote it on the back of a dirty napkin totally drunk,” Reed David sings, highlighting the rather modest beginnings of some of the world’s most recognizable songs. As for “Awful Pop Song”, it’s anything but — rather, a nice introduction to a talented act with a knack for hooks.
