The Last Origin – “Ought”

/

The Last Origin are a rock act from Louisville, Kentucky, churning out a sound that recalls the psych-friendly garage leanings of Deerhunter. Their new EP God Keeps Calling released this month, and showcases a band with ample potential and stylistic confidence. All four tracks stand out nicely, though my favorite of the bunch is “Ought,” which features jangly guitars and creeping synths amidst the vocals, which range from suave nonchalance in the verses to more psych-friendly raucousness in the bridge and chorus. The jangly guitars and relaxed vocals contrast well with the more involved guitar additions and fervent vocal presence, making for a track with a great feel and satisfying melodic variation.

“Ought” and other memorable tracks from this month can also be streamed on the updating Obscure Sound’s ‘Best of April 2019’ Spotify playlist.

The track is also featured in the genre-based, best-of Spotify compilation Indie Rock.
