“Hey Jackie” is a striking track from Toronto-based artist Nyssa. Twangy guitars and understated synths converge alongside Nyssa’s vocal presence, touting a melodic rock and country feel, with lyrics that echo a generational cry for connection in the midst of anxiety-inducing expectations. “Everyone’s pregnant, my oh my,” she sings just prior to the captivating vocal escalation. “I slept in a boxcar at 30-below,” she sings shortly thereafter, emitting a spine-tingling quiver. The line “Jackie, I wanna dance with you,” begins a soaring conclusion, one that solidifies Nyssa’s power on this track. Aesthetically, I’m fondly reminded of Mitski. Look for Nyssa to have a similarly meteoric rise.
