The 113 – “Presence”

//

Touting gripping post-punk escalation with a driving synth-laden undercurrent, “Presence” is a new track from The 113, the project of Leeds-based artist Jack Grant. A clanging bass-driven hop complements a suave vocal lead to start, the gradual synth addition reminding of LCD Soundsystem. The atmospheric guitar line approaching the one-minute mark adds a more nocturnal post-punk tint as the lyrics increase in frequency. The slabs of post-punk guitars and atmospheric underlying synths converge with the gripping vocal suaveness for a captivating aesthetic. The 113’s “Presence” impresses with its driving melodic and aesthetic pull, blending post-punk nostalgia with a contemporary charm.

“The track is about trying too hard to write a song, and becoming incredibly stressed and angered by the failure that follows,” Grant says.

“Presence” and other memorable tracks from this month can also be streamed on the updating Obscure Sound’s ‘Best of December 2021’ Spotify playlist.
