Monoq – “Zebra”

/

“Zebra” crafts a hypnotic rock sound with some Middle Eastern influence. Israel-based artist Monoq meshes expressive guitar twangs alongside metaphorical lyrical perspectives. “Our valleys run out of water, while view is running out of you,” the vocals open, with twangy guitars re-emerging upon the “zebra is wearing a cage,” line.

Later reflections suggest a sense of societal discontent — “it’s not black, it’s not white, it’s just rage, you know the zebra, is wearing a cage.” The instrumentation in this second half shows some Middle Eastern influence in the guitar tones, cohesively navigating alongside spacey synths for an inventive and melodic sound.

This and other tracks featured this month can be streamed on the updating Obscure Sound’s ‘Best of January 2023’ Spotify playlist.
