Mono Martian – “Wicked Ways”

/

A new track from Norwegian artist Mono Martian, “Wicked Ways” achieves a stirring sound with its patient rock build alongside lyrics depicting “how ‘this crazy little thing called love’ can quickly turn into a downward spiral,” per Jørgen Landhaug, the musician behind the project. He is also known for his work as the drummer in Libido and frontman/guitarist in the band Costar.

“Wicked Ways” grips with its emotive escalations, with heartrending qualities reflected in the lyrics and rising momentum. “Why do you push me away?” Landhaug questions, lamenting “there’s too much confusion,” as the mournful guitar twangs emerge.

An emphasis on the vocal emotion — particularly upon the questioning lyrical segments — combines with the contemplative guitar-laden builds for an introspective feeling that succeeds, satiating fully as twangy guitars and backing vocal elegance shimmers past the two-minute turn.

Landhaug continues: “The track has a minimalistic approach to instrumentation and production. I want the vocals, the story, the atmosphere, and the delivery to create a great listening experience for the audience.”

This and other tracks featured this month can be streamed on the updating Obscure Sound’s ‘Best of April 2023’ Spotify playlist.
