A transatlantic band based between London and Los Angeles, Sky Is Alright blend expansive shoegaze, ’90s alternative rock, and grunge with deeply personal songwriting on FINITE., their first full-length release in five years. Written by Rishi Neal Arora in the aftermath of his sister’s death in 2022, the album confronts grief, memory, and the enduring presence of love.
Album opener “Summer In Galt” caught our ears a couple of months ago with its absorbing mix of alt-rock vigor and shoegaze-y textures. The immersive atmospherics and melodic production continue throughout the album, apparent right away on ensuing track “Angeli.” “Maybe you’re a bird, that’s flying high,” resonant vocals commence amidst a mixture of twangy emotion and warming shoegaze tones; the vocals match the latter aesthetic, fondly reminiscent of MBV in the laid-back, hypnotic delivery. A punchy “all hail…” vocal segment ticks up the ardor, fondly reminiscent of Spiritualized there in the bursting guitars and invigorated vocal interplay.
Another standout track, “Argue For Sunlight” is delectably hazy in its ethereal vocals and whirring guitar presence. Exulting vocal fervor approaches the four-minute mark with enjoyable charisma, lending an anthemic element to the blissfully shoegaze allure. Album closer “Rendered Obsolete” is another gem, spanning well from its sludgy bass-fronted introduction to a dreamy melding of trickling guitars, washes of distortion, and caressing vocal appeal. Strings make a stellar appearance here, as well. Enveloping across its consistently melodic shoegaze, dream-pop, and alt-rock offerings, FINITE. is a wholly immersive album from Sky Is Alright.
