DUDE, MY DUDE – “Loser”

/

Bursting with hooky ’90s rock nostalgia, “Loser” is an anthemic success from DUDE, MY DUDE, the duo of Benjamin Lyth and Matthieu Thienpont. Their debut single firmly succeeds with a contagious throwback rock aesthetic and climactic structural build. Suave vocals navigate through the first minute alongside pulsing guitars, escalating with gleeful exuberance — “I’m such a fucking loser,” — around the one-minute turn. A playfully reflective backing vocal around 01:20 adds further to the enjoyment, with expansive guitars assembling a raucously enthralling bridge. “Loser” is a blast of fun.

The duo, who formed in 2019, elaborate more on the track’s background:

“The demo of ‘Loser’ was recorded on an iPhone, which gave the song a characteristic rawness that they kept in the studio version. This felt fitting considering the tongue-in-cheek lyrics – the song recounts the classic events that accompany a walk home after a night out: losing your phone, your friends, and lamenting your situation as you eat a cold portion of cheesy chips.”

“Loser” and other memorable tracks from this month can also be streamed on the updating Obscure Sound’s ‘Best of March 2021’ Spotify playlist.

The track is also featured in the genre-based, best-of Spotify compilation Emerging Indie Rock.
