Mort City – “America’s City”

//

“America’s City” is the latest track from Mort City, a bicoastal duo comprising two college friends, based in Southern California and NYC. Dubbing their style “punk rap,” Mort City unveil “America’s City” following two years of collaboration. Conveying a funk-laden rhythm section, lazy-day guitar twangs, and confidently conversational vocals, “America’s City” consumes with its debonair rock stylings.

The understated vocals find solace alongside mellow guitars and sporadic synth warbles. “I want you to know, it’s America’s city, it’s America’s town,” the compelling chorus lets out, punching with some added vigor in the added guitar-laden enthusiasm. The steady guitars and Afrobeat rhythmic inspiration make for a mellow first half, brought to further life thereafter.

A blast of fuzzy guitar distortion titillating in the conclusion, with an electrifying guitar presence consuming into the final minute. It’s a pleasure to hear this track’s gradual development into an ardent rock display, from its entrancingly suave beginnings. “America’s City” is a surefire winner from Mort City.

This and other tracks featured this month can be streamed on the updating Obscure Sound’s ‘Best of October 2022’ Spotify playlist.
