Invigorating in its evolving, dynamic electronic sound, “I TOLD YOU” is a riveting new single from Australian artist Dr. Brown, also featuring slakerr on vocals. Swelling from mellow keys and gentle pit-pattering into expressive vocal arrays, colorful rhythms, and brass-forward charisma, the track delights with an energy that’s both bustling and introspective — the former propelled by an eclectic assortment of instrumentation, while the latter finds its place via the therapy-setting vocal infusions throughout.
Simmering keys, tender guitar trickles, and slight rhythms drive an enticing introduction, alongside a therapist and client, who is at a place of soul-searching and desperation for help. “I can’t find anything or anyone, and no one wants to help me,” the client lets out, his vocals then absolving as wordless, vibrant vocal infusions combine with snappier percussion. “Tell me how you feel,” the therapist’s voice re-emerges, drawing back and forth between the conversations, with a meditative-like trance.
The production takes particular inspiration from Flume, while personal themes of mental health draw from personal experience. Dr. Brown describes the story behind the release being about “mental health and how it can create a deep sense of the past present and future. The vocals portrays a lot of emotion through a short therapy talk by the angelic chords in accompanying them.” The result is a thorough success, immersing in its originality and artistry.
